They are absent from many New Zealand forests due to predation and competition from introduced pests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sanctuary supports the South Island k\u0101k\u0101 recovery programme. Birds bred here are released into predator-controlled areas to help re-establish wild populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"safari-reader:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-animals\/birds\/birds-a-z\/kaka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">More about k\u0101k\u0101<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antipodes Island parakeets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antipodes Island parakeets are not native to mainland New Zealand and found here only in captivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our parakeets are part of a very small \u2018insurance\u2019 population which was established in case harm befell the isolated wild population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ruru koukou\/morepork<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruru koukou are small owls with rounded wings perfectly adapted to forest hunting. If you can\u2019t see many birds during your visit, look out for&nbsp;<a href=\"safari-reader:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-animals\/birds\/birds-a-z\/nz-falcon-karearea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">k\u0101rearea<\/a>, the beautiful and rare native falcon who may be paying the sanctuary residents an unwelcome visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The birds held in aviaries here have either been injured and cannot survive in the wild, or they are involved in captive rearing programmes.
