WAINUI FALLS WALK
Cross farmland for a short distance, then walk through a forest of Nīkau palms, Rātā trees and ferns.
The track climbs rapidly alongside spectacular granite boulders, following the Wainui River. There’s a great suspension bridge on the way – below this you can see old logs piled up after massive floods.
You’ll know you’re close to the falls when you can hear the sound of rushing water.
Return to the Wainui Bay car park on the same track.
The walk is popular with families and can be very busy throughout the day over the peak summer months when people flock to the Nelson/Tasman region. The best time to complete this walk is in autumn when there are fewer people in the area, and while temperatures remain warm after the summer. You’ll also get to appreciate the natural flair and colour of nearby Takaka, where the locals will always stop to chat.
On the way to the Wainui falls you can get view across the valley when openings in the bush appear.
Beech trees, King ferns, and other natives can be seen throughout this walk.
This Wainui Falls walk is easy but can go up and down in parts, there are plenty of stops along the way to enjoy the scenery.
A single tree grows alongside the path.
Other smaller falls can be spotted along the walk if you look hard enough.
This is part of Wainui River with is rugged rocks.
Abel Tasman is rugged and rocky in this area allowing nature to finds its way.
Rushing water pours over the rocks finding it way down the valley to the sea.

Looking over the top of the forest canopy you can see the hills towards Takaka.
Punga ferns are so bold, green and lush.
New fronds of the punga fern start to appear in the middle reaching up towards the light.
