Mount Sunday is a stunning site with expansive views of the Rangitata River and the surrounding mountains.
The small hill got its name because boundary riders from the high-country stations would meet here on Sundays. More recently it was the film site for Edoras Kingdon of Rohan in the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
The track starts on Hakatere Potts Road, about 48 km west of Mount Somers. Leave Mount Somers on Ashburton Gorge Road, which becomes Hakatere Potts Road, continue past Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater and enter the gravel road onto Mt Potts Station. You can see the Mt Sunday from the top of the hill before the valley itself. Carpark is just off the gravel road and follow the orange markers to get along the through the private land, and up on to Mt Sunday, the walk is steep up the right side of the Mt Sunday, but is manageable with good fitness. Views from the top are spectacular and amazing in the right conditions. Be sure that you have the proper clothing as the weather can change quickly and without warning.
