AVALANCHE CREEK FALLS

Avalanche Creek Falls is roughly a 2-hours drive away from Christchurch or 1.5-hours from Greymouth. The road surface is always sealed.

If you drive from either Christchurch or Greymouth, travel on the SH-73 until you reach Arthur’s Pass Village. You can leave your car near the Information Center. Picnic tables and toilets are available there.

Follow the path along the base of the hill towards the village. Small trout are often seen in Avalanche Creek from the historic bridge. From here, the path goes up to a viewing platform overlooking the Avalanche Creek Waterfall, which is lit at night.

There are three waterfalls – the lower, middle and the upper ones. The lower one is seen from the bridge, while the middle one is visible from the lookout platform at the end of the track.

To see the upper waterfall (and full waterfall – all 3 leaps) – from the Visitor Centre, cross the road and follow Devils Punchbowl Waterfall track. After 2-5 minutes look back – you’ll be astonished by the waterfall’s view (refer to the Gallery).
