Today I have thoroughly enjoyed a cruise up Lake Te Anau, to the Te Anau Glowworm Caves on the westside of the lake, once there I was given a great introduction to the caves and how they were formed of millions of years, by the humours and knowledgeable guide Will. Then we headed inside where we unfortunately were not able to take any photos, but the views, and sounds of the running water through the walls which were made up of limestone and sand that was seen compacted, it was incredible to hear and see. There were even some amazing waterfalls where the water had eroded the limestone making holes for the water to fall down to the lower levels. We even climbed aboard a small blue boat to travel the waterways to quietly view the thousands of glowworms covering the roof and walls of the caves. All very safe and gave us plenty of time to view the glowworms that looked like stars in a night sky. Once the tour was complete inside the cave we returned to the surface and could meander along the nature path through the wonderful bush which lead back to the information room for a refreshing drink or snack, and then watched a video which provided more detailed information about the gruesome, carnivorous creature.
Would highly recommend this cruise for anyone from New Zealand or overseas, totally worth it and memorable.
